The VO2 Max is a measure of aerobics fitness. The definition of VO2 max is the maximal rate at which oxygen can be consumed per minute. VO2 max is the maximum ability of the body to transport oxygen from the air to the muscles for energy generation. It involves the heart’s capacity to pump oxygen- rich blood to the muscles, as well as the muscles’ efficiency in extracting and utilizing the oxygen.
It is measured in ml/kg/min. If the arteries and veins are like roads, and doing aerobics is like paving those roads, so the oxygenated blood can get around easier, then having a high VO2 max means your veins and arteries are like a motorway. VO2 max is a measure of how quickly that oxygenated blood can get to the muscles.
It basically measures how good your heart is!! next time you do a treadmill stress test, check your Vo2 Max, with your doctor. A score generally above 40ml/Kg/min (12 METS ) and above is a good score.
